Michael J. Shea, PhD.

Visceral Manipulation was originally developed in France by the Osteopathic community. It involves a systematic assessment and work on all the organs of the trunk, abdomen and pelvis. This form of therapy is used to determine the influence of the organ systems on the overall well being of the whole body and, in particular, the Craniosacral System. It is also used as a complement to Massage Therapy, Shiatsu, Rolfing and numerous other manual therapeutic approaches. In this course, therapeutic contact will be made with the principle organs of the abdomen and pelvis including the liver, gallbladder, stomach, duodenum, small intestines, large intestine and kidneys.

We will incorporate gentle palpation skills to make contact with the organs. Assessment will be made of each organ’s motion in relation to normal movement. Visceral relationships to structure and function of the body will be tracked through the autonomic nervous system. Detailed autonomic nervous system anatomy and physiology will be taught.

This comprehensive 4 day course will combine classroom lecture, anatomy and embryology presentations and discussion with hands on practice each day. Participants will return to their clinical practice with a basic understanding of the abdominal-pelvic system and the beginning skills necessary to assess some of the important viscera in relationship to whole body function.

Topics that will be discussed during the seminar:

  • Learn the Visceral-Somatic reflexes
  • Understand the relationship between the autonomic nervous system, the enteric nervous system and the brain
  • Integrate the Craniosacral System with the viscera
  • Learn detailed anatomy of the visc
