Introduction To Biodynamic Practice: Primary Respiration
A Professional Training

Three Day Training.

July 25-27, 2008 - 10am-6pm

Aug 8-10, 2008 - 10am-6pm

Approved for New York CEUs

This 3-day course for healing and bodywork professionals seeks to impart the skills necessary to begin to work with "primary respiration," a therapeutic tidal-like movement in the fluids of the body named by Dr. Sutherland, the founder of Cranial Osteopathy. Working with it requires a still heart and deep perception and listening skills. We will learn practices that will permit us to establish "presence" and "grounding" and to sense subtle movement in the fluids of the body. We will also cover:  appropriate therapist/client boundaries; the theory underlying the Biodynamic Craniosacral approach (the view of the body as a fluid structure of living water, and how it communicates its stresses, patterns of resistance and past traumas); the four stages of dynamic morphology based on the development of the human embryo; palpation of the "long tide" (primary respiration) by contact with the shoulder, pelvis, feet, sacrum and spine; and how to decompress the structures around the heart and how this manual work relates to the psychospiritual dimensions of the human heart. The focus of this class will be on the development of the heart and the therapeutic implications of the biodynamic approach to craniosacral therapy.

Class Prerequiste: Required reading: chapters 1,2,5,12, 13-15 of Michael Shea's textbook, Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy Volume 1 (available at the Open Center bookstore).  This course is for students with little or no prior training in craniosacral therapy and is a requirement for the long-term training in biodynamic craniosacral therapy (which also includes components specializing in resolving prenatal and birth related issues in both infants and children, as well as adult clients.)

Course Location: New York, New York.

Tuition: $360 Members/$390 Nonmembers

Refund Policy: – All tuition paid is non-refundable. Students who cancel may apply their tuition to any future class within 12 months of the date of notification of cancellation

An Introduction to Biodynamic Practice: Primary Respiration

This 4-day course introduces students to the skills necessary to come into appropriate and correct relationship with Primary Respiration, a therapeutic force in the fluids of the body named by Dr. Sutherland. Contact with it requires a still heart, deep perception, and the art of listening. Time is spent learning how to establish presence, grounding, and appropriate boundaries between the therapist and the client. The delicate contact necessary to sense subtle movement in the fluid of the body will be taught. Practices and meditations will be given to differentiate the effects of Primary Respiration in and around the soma. In addition, there is a focus on Primary Respiration as the movement of wholeness in human embryology that remains in the body throughout the life span. EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES:
  • Differentiate the biomechanical and biodynamic models of craniosacral therapy: The history of Craniosacral Therapy
  • Explore biodynamic theory: The soma, the fluid body of potency, the tidal body of Primary Respiration and the state of Dynamic Stillness.
  • Learn the four stages of the Dynamic Morphology of the human embryo
  • Palpation with the shoulder and pelvic girdles, feet, sacrum and spine.

This course is required of any student to study with Dr. Shea who has little or no prior training or clinical experience with craniosacral therapy.
